These beautifully illustrated books feature scenes from
the classic story of Ulysses. As part of the core curriculum
in sixth grade, all students read The Adventures of
Ulysses by Bernard Evslin. In art class, students
created watercolor paintings that capture the characters,
setting and mood of the various passages. Students were
asked to consider which colors would best set the scene, how
they would arrange their picture on the page to create a
central focus for the viewer and how they could form a sense
of space by establishing a foreground and background in the
image. Students were also encouraged to consider whether
their image would work best as a close-up, medium-shot, or
long shot.

Upon completion of the rough drafts, the class
participated in a group critique. During this time, students
offered constructive criticism to their classmates. Upon
viewing their fellow classmates work and receiving
helpful suggestions, students incorporated the changes that
would make their pictures stronger. To complete the images,
students applied watercolor paints using a variety of
techniques. Color mixing and limiting the palette became an
important way for students to capture the mood of the scene.
The resulting images capture the essence of the passages in
dramatic fashion.
