All students can learn and succeed if given the attention, time, and nurturing. In my integrated social studies/language arts classes, I try to provide students with learning experiences that will develop independent, empowered learners. Within a wide variety of learning experiences, students will have opportunities to apply critical thinking skills and work cooperatively with others to solve problems. As a professional, I try to adapt and accommodate the different learning styles of children. Trying to bring history to life and make learning fun and memorable is critical to internalizing knowledge. "Hands-on" projects, debates, and games will enable students to effectively and uniquely "study" ancient civilizations in a way they will never forget. Enthusiasm, creativity, and perseverance will help students to take on problem solving challenges and succeed in a positive learning experience. Creating a classroom where positive self-esteem is the cornerstone of whatever we do in class is critical. It is what makes one strive to achieve excellence. It is what makes students take risks in a safe classroom environment. There is much hard work in 6th grade --- but students in my class know that anything worthwhile involves hard work. Students have the opportunity to become initiators and not just receptors of knowledge. Most importantly, they will feel good about themselves and they will succeed!!! |
